Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program1

The Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program found that navigation significantly improved the time interval between mammography and core breast biopsy for those patients with suspicious breast findings. In 1999, patients who had been initially referred for mammography through the provincial breast screening program were navigated and had a wait time to biopsy following a positive finding of 12 days. Patients who were referred by their physicians were not navigated and had a wait time of 20 days. In 2000, all patients—those screened and those referred—were navigated. The wait time for referral patients to biopsy improved 30% to 14 days.
